What is Metric Yarn Count System?

What is Metric Count?

The metric yarn count system or yarn number or linear density, refers to the numerical indication that shows how defined or coarse a yarn is. Using this, the length per unit or mass per unit length of a yarn in relation to its weight, can be determined.

As for the metric count, it expresses how many hanks of 1000 meters can be obtained from 1000 gm or 1 kg weight of yarn. In simpler terms, the yarn count system tells us the number of grams present per kilometer of yarn.

The unit for the measurement of yarn is DeciTex, DTex. Using this unit, a yarn’s characteristics can be identified without much work. These should not be estimated as the results will not be desirable.

In this article, we will go through some topics that tell more about the metric yarn count system.

Why Is the Yarn Count System Important?

The yarn count system is mandatory to conduct as it tells a lot about a yarn’s quality. The strength, durability, and comfort, all can be figured out just from the yarn count. It helps to determine where a specific type of yarn can be used and how it should be used.

The yarn count is an important number that can only be figured out if you carry out the task as it cannot be and should not be estimated. Using the wrong kind of yarn to manufacture an item is going to cost a loss of time and money.

Types of Metric Yarn Count System

The yarn number or count can be measured using different units or systems it depends on the type of material used to prepare the yarn. In the textile industry, there are two types of yarn count measurement systems.

1. Instrumental System – Just from the name it can be said that this process includes the usage of various instruments to get the yarn count. No calculations are involved as types of machinery do most of the work. There is a lot of industrial equipment such as the wrap reel balance, Beesley balance, quadrant balance, and Stubb yarn balance used to carry out this task.

2. Analytical System – This process consists of various other systems which are carried out based on different calculations. You can do it using a direct or indirect way. To find the yarn count of denier, tex, and jute, a direct way is used. As for cotton, worsted or metric, indirect count is preferable.

Final Words:

The metric yarn count system is important for the textile industry as it helps to determine which type of yarn can be used to manufacture a specific product. Without the correct understanding of various yarns, products will not have the required stability and people will not be able to take good care of them. the yarn of fabric determines the 3 Rs – Radiance, Reliability, and Resilience, all of which are very crucial.
